CHURN IS DEAD
The AI Trap in Customer Success

On LinkedIn I wrote: *“AI won’t save your broken customer experience. It’ll just scale it.”*
Here’s the deeper truth behind that line.
Why Leaders Are Falling for the Illusion
AI is seductive because it gives CS leaders what they crave:
- Faster dashboards
- Cleaner summaries
- Predictive churn models that “look” scientific
But here’s the catch: speed isn’t progress.
If the underlying motion is broken, AI will just expose the cracks faster at scale.
The Three AI Traps
1. Summaries Without Substance
Your AI can generate a flawless recap of Q2. But if your QBR still doesn’t push a decision, it’s just a polished obituary of the past.
2. Over-Trusting the Model
When AI flags risk, most teams don’t ask *why*. They execute the playbook blindly. That’s how you mistake “usage drop” for churn risk — when in reality, it’s a signal of consolidation or growth.
3. Automating Human Moments
Handshakes, trust-building, subtle reads of exec appetite, AI can’t replicate those. When you automate them, you hollow out the only part of CS that actually protects revenue.
What Strong CS Leaders Do Differently
They treat AI like an intern:
- Great at prep,
- Awful at context,
- Needs supervision.
The leader’s job is to feed better inputs (fix ICP, onboarding, handoffs), then interrogate outputs before they shape customer plays.
Takeaway for This Week
Next time your AI tool spits out a recommendation, ask three questions before acting:
1. *What assumption is this model making?*
2. *What context is it blind to?*
3. *Does this match what my customer actually believes right now?*
If you can’t answer, don’t act.
AI can be a force multiplier but only for teams that already have strong fundamentals.
Otherwise, you’re just putting a jet engine on a broken car.
The question for CS leaders:
Are you using AI to strengthen your customer experience or just to scale the same problems faster?
